2020–The Perfect Example Why Your Business Needs a Subscriber Database
September 2020: Over 165,000 Businesses Shut their doors Permanently
According to Yelp, as of September 2020, over 165,000 small businesses in the United States have closed their doors permanently. One an argue to the cows come home about the Constitutionality of local governments imposing ‘open’ restrictions on these businesses but litigation can take months and when you have hungry mouths to feed, you can’t feed a family excuses. So what’s a law abiding, business person to do? Indeed, over 100,000 of those were restaurants run by mom and pop. They depend heavily on foot traffic but during this past year, foot traffic was done in excess of 80%. Many of those small businesses really never took the time to develop a serious customer database. (more about that in a minute)
Social Media to the Rescue.. or at the Mercy of Social Giants
Most of these businesses relied on social media for posting specials and notifying their clientele that they were still open for pick up or delivery, but that relies almost exclusively on either running ads on Facebook or being lucky enough to have your customers see your postings. One method insures you’re spending money you don’t have; the other relies on the passive action of hoping someone will see your posts. Another phenomena of the year of 2020 was the rise in “Cancel Culture”. The Cambridge Dictionary describes it as this:
a way of behaving in a society or group, especially on social media, in which it is common to completely reject and stop supporting someone because they have said or done something that offends you:
This first took form on social shunning as sort of a ‘teenster mean girl effect’ and has matured into full-throated business cancelling as seen recently when Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, MailChimp and more have all taken actions against actors large and small, who it can be argued, hold different philosophical or political views about society and culture. This leaves business people knowing they can be punished unless they conform to what BigTech demands. Not a very effective way of marketing a business especially during a national health emergency!
